 2017 Preview 


       Winston County finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Winston County finished seventh in Class 2A region seven with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The defense allowed a team record 482 points last season. The Yellow Jackets hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 7-4 record in 2015.

       Winston County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.6 points a game.

       Winston County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 48.2 points a game.

       Since 2010, Winston County has gone a combined 25-49. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 2A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Winston County has managed to compile a record of 117-166. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 2A and 273rd in the AHSAA.

       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Bart Stephenson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Winston County. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Stephenson.

       Coach Stephenson's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 16-26 (38.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Stephenson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       The Winston County Yellow Jackets will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2017 season. The Yellow Jackets have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-49 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 2A and 60th in the AHSAA.

       The Yellow Jackets enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       This season, the Yellow Jackets will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven.

       The Yellow Jackets open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Haleyville on Friday, September 1 at Memorial Stadium/Bubba Scott Field. Last year the Haleyville Lions finished with an overall record of 9-2 and in first place in Class 4A region six. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Hokes Bluff by a score of 24-8.

       Winston County and Haleyville have met a total of 58 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 15-42-1 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Haleyville winning by a score of 47-22.

Demopolis scored a record 761 points during the 2004 season. The Tigers finished the season 15-0.
